the print didn't really work with the embossed logo, so i decided to design another layer which will be printed over the gradient layer. to put more anthesis on the logo. this would also make the print look more aphetically pleasing. here are some quick ideas which i have drawn on some of the test prints.

the embossing was not as successful as i had expected it to be, as it was too subtle and could only be noticed when looked at closely.

i then decided to make an embossing template for the logo so that it would be a nice way to subtle include it on the print.

i decided to use a gradient for these screen prints as it would work well with the northern lights skys which are at the North Pole.

i used printed 10 prints with a purple/blue/silver/sky blue gradient

and 10 prints with a magenta/purple/blue/silver/sky blue and green gradient.

i designed my template for the print in a way so the colour would invert when it entered the arctic circle. i decided to use a style of illustration which would work well for a map so i used contoured line work on the main part of the map.

i also added another grid on top of the map part so that it would look more like a map. the template was then simplified so that it would work as a one colour screen.

Above i have created some variations for a logo which reads ARCTIC CIRCLE. i have decided to do a print based on this logo, because it is pretty hard to figure out it reads arctic circle unless you have been told. If you want proof draw it out and ask someone what they this is says and watch them struggle.

I decided it would be interesting to see how this logo would combine with a map of the North Pole.

Here are some characters ideas which i have based around mobile phones. The inspiration for these characters came from my phone which is an ancient sony samsung d9 whatever. i have based them around slide phones, the idea for the characters is that when the phone is normal the face looks unhappy and when it slides open the face looks happy. i will refine these images by using illustrator and photoshop and use them for briefs for Carphone warehouse for example. As they have offers where you can trade old phones for new ones or cash.

i have changed the colour of the type on the arm of the devil character, so it is not as noticeable as the black and white variations used previously, i have left the drop shadow effect so that it blends in more with the red used for the character.

here is another variation where i have used a drop shadow effect on the text which makes it look more like a double lined shading effect on a tattoo.

i think that i have over done it with the blending and smudgeing tools in this variation, but i have learnt some new techniques so it is ok. I will do another colour variation which uses more solid colours which will make the parts that have highlights on them, stand out more. i will also do another vertion where i use the actual type rather than this handdrawn type which i have used.
because it will look alot more cleaner.

my portfolio is mainly image based. its shows that my work has gone down the root of character design, however it also shows my developing skills in illustration and craft. i have developed a strong interest for screen-printing and the strengths within my portfolio are from print making. Even though my work is predominantly image based i also have began to involve type within my work. this I would like to develop as i progress into the third year.

Relate your own work to specific areas of contemporary design.

i would say that my work is heading towards a more illustration side of design, i look up to illustrators such as steven Harrington and Sanna Annukka. i would like to think my work shares some similarities to both of these designers, and i like working in the same area (screen printing). i also have produced work which is of a limited edition value as i like producing work which has an authentic, collectors feel to it. this is similar to Kid Robot- Dunny Vinyl toys and Johnny cupcakes- limited editon t shirt designer.

Evaluate your strengths and weaknesses against identified intentions and areas of contemporary practice.

My strengths at present would be my screen-print work and character/ illustration. therefore i have got a placement at a character designing company in newcastle called Paul Windels, this will give me a broader understanding of the type of briefs and style of work which is produced in this area of design. i will also be contacting screen printers and illustrators, so i can gain a broader understanding of how they receive work and seek more advice on my professional practice. My weakness in design is type and layout, i will need to gain a more in-depth understanding of this area in design to make my work stronger as i progress into the third year.

Clarify areas of design, skills development and professional concerns you aim to investigate further from this point forward.

i will be developing my screen printing skills, by trying and testing different styles of printing within this process which will allow me to have a more informed understanding as i begin my third year. i will Also be developing a broader understanding of type and layout and the rules which are related to this area of design, this will help me to combine my image style with typography in a more informed manor. i would also like to develop my skills on photoshop more as it work give me a chance to produces more work using software, this will develop my work from just looking hand crafted.

Briefly clarify the relationship between your creative practice and your proposed dissertation.

A study into the influences of subcultures on Graphic Design throughout the Post Modern period and how this is having an effect on design in contemporary culture.
i have chosen this as my dissertation as i believe subcultures have had a major influence on graphic design, and it will be interesting to see how this has developed and how styles have been adopted and created.

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
I have learnt how to work to fast deadlines for example in the first lesson when we were given a bit of text which we had to make an image for and an image which we had to extend. i thought this was a good way of working as it gets you thinking quicker and helps you to work under pressure. this is a realistic way of getting prepared for industry. the work i produced for this was at a very basic level, as i found it very had to work at this pace, however i will be practicing this style of working in my own time, this will help me find a more personal style of illustration. and give me a chance to explore ore mediums.

2. What approaches to generating work and solutions to problems have you developed and how have they helped?
i have developed the way i use inks when producing illustrations. this was mainly used in the eye charts, i enjoyed working with inks as it gave me a chance to be more expressive and it was good to produce interesting compositions and tone when layering different thickness of ink.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?
i found that the strengths in my work were the 3d object and the box which i created for the the day in the life project. i Will be including 3d craft more in my work in future projects, however it is time consuming, but i have found that if you spend more time by putting alot of craft into mock ups it looks a lot better when it comes to photographing your work, which over all saves time because you don't have to spend much time tweaking the content of images in photo shop.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how could you exploit these more fully?
i found that the weakness in my work were the quick briefs which we were given at the start of the project, i will be doing more of these in my own time, however i will be setting limitations such as colour, mediums i can use and scale for example, i will be collecting quotes, lyrics and story's which i will be able to create interesting images for. this will also give me a chance to research into editorial illustration and book illustration so that i am informing my design decisions.

5. Identify five things that you will do different next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

i will spend more time on my blog, rather than posting randomely and in bulk i will even out my posting by posting twice a week. this will help me to see my progression in a more organised and structured way. this will also help me inform my design in a better way.

i will practice photographing my work better, for example different ways i can photograph such as useing a tripod, this will help my images to be more focused. this will help the presentation of my work to look better.

i will do more primarry research in my topic areas and do more research into target audiences, this will help my work to be more informed therfore will make designing a lot easier.

i will work on my presentation skills when it comes to crits etc. this is one of my major weaknesses which i have to spent alot of time perfecting. i need to work on being more formal and speaking of my ideas to other in a way so that they see what iam trying to get across.

i looked at a range of ways in which i could bind the storyboards for each part of the day.

such as coptic stitch and accordion book binding. i found that the most appropriate for the idea was to use acordion binding as it is less bulky and still gives you the a lot of space to work with.

here are some layouts for eye charts which i created using three different images of a boom box. i have used black ink (only) to create these images they decrease in detail. i have done this by using less layers of ink therefore the last image is more fainter then the first.

I have looked at a wide range of eye charts, it is a nice simple way to show detail and hierarchy of information within your illustrations.

the layout of the chart is restricted, however even though there is limitations there is still ways that you can be creative with how the images are positioned. here are some more interesting ideas below

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
I have learnt how to foil block print which is a process which I didn’t previousely no how to do. I have developed my screen- printing skills also. I did this by taking advantage of the amount of time which I had in the screen print drop-ins. The skills which I have developed in this area of printing will be useful in my future work as I think the print method suits my style of illustrations. I have also learned how to screen print more effectively for example: rather than using the bays to print some of the more detailed colour screens I will in future register them more manually and print them on tables. As the bays slightly adjust the lineing of the colours as you will see on my screen prints.

2. What approaches to generating work and solutions to problems have you developed and how have they helped?
I have developed the way I generate my ideas. As I created multiple copies of templates for example I multiplied the trainer templates so that they were on one page. So preparing my design sheets helped me to generate my ideas in a more organized and creative way. This has helped my overall work to feel more organized so that it will look more appealing when people come to look at it. Originally I was going to print my box as one big net and double sided. However because it would have to be A0 and having it double sided would make it very expensive. I decided to print the net of box in separate sections. This gave me a chance to use my craft skills to make the box feel more realistic, this was very time consuming however I will be able generate and make up mock ups more quicker in the future, as I now no short cuts.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?
I found that the main strengths in my work were the final presentation box which I made created. However if I had spent less time on the box I would have had time to make up more mock ups of different box ideas. Because the boxes only needed to be at photographic standard, i could have left out element which would have helped gave me more time to develop my project more. however i will do this in my spear time, so that i have some extra work which can go into my porfolio.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how could you exploit these more fully?
i found that overall the biggest disapointment within my work was the research stages, as didn't really spent as much time as i needed on the print costs part of my project, i could have done more pilimanary research into getting quotes and prices lists, however i will in future time table more time for this area of work rather than over spending time on the more practical area of my work.

SCREEN PRINTING
The equivalent of the printing plate for the screen printer is the SCREEN - a wooden or aluminium frame with a fine nylon MESH stretched over it. The MESH is coated with a light sensitive emulsion or film, which - when dry - will block the holes in the mesh. The image that needs to be printed is output to film either by camera or image-setter. This film positive and the mesh on the screen are sandwiched together and exposed to ultra-violet light in a device called a print-down frame. The screen is then washed with a jet of water which washes away all the light sensitive emulsion that has not been hardened by the ultra-violet light. This leaves you with an open stencil which corresponds exactly to the image that was supplied on the film. Now the screen is fitted on the press and is hinged so it can be raised and lowered. The substrate to be printed is placed in position under the screen and ink is placed on the top side of the screen, (the frame acts also as wall to contain the ink ). A rubber blade gripped in a wooden or metal handle called a SQUEEGEE (not unlike a giant wind-screen wiper) is pulled across the top of the screen; it pushes the ink through the mesh onto the surface of the substrate you are printing. To repeat the process the squeegee floods the screen again with a return stroke before printing the next impression.

i have decided to choose limited edition trainers, for the main focus of this brief. i found the limited edition puma santa cruz hi tops to be the main inspiration for this brief. i have created a brand called 'SNEAKZ'. this will be the main brand for my trainers which i will create designs for. i will create designs for a basketball, football and tennis trainer. these will be based around a characters which will link into the designs.

i will then promote the trainers, by creating packaging, posters, t-shirts...

In offset printing, a spot color is any color generated by an ink (pure or mixed) that is printed using a single run.
The widely-spread offset printing process is composed of four spot colors: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Key (black) commonly referred to as CMYK. More advanced processes involve the use of six spot colors (hexachromatic process), which add Orange and Green to the process (termed CMYKOG). The two additional spot colors are added to compensate for the inefficient reproduction of faint tints using CMYK colors only. However, offset technicians around the world use the term spot color to mean any color generated by a non-standard offset ink; such as metallic, fluorescent, spot varnish, or custom hand-mixed inks.
When making a multi-color print with a spot color process, every spot color needs its own lithographic film. All the areas of the same spot color are printed using the same film, hence, using the same lithographic plate. The dot gain, hence the screen angle and line frequency, of a spot color vary according to its intended purpose. Spot lamination and UV coatings are sometimes referred to as 'spot colors', as they share the characteristics of requiring a separate lithographic film and print run.

Duotone is the generic name for multitone printing, which can be done with two, three or four inks.
Thanks in part to Photoshop, duotone is also a generic term for images using a color-separation printing scheme. Normally CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key (blacK)) separations, whereas a duotone would be two separations, and can be of any ink color (in offset printing).

for these images i have created duotones of the original prints on photshop. i have used spot colours to create them. this means that they can not be printed using C M Y K plates. as a spot colour has to be mixed separately and has a separate plate. in this case however the printing process will only need two to three plates anyway. so it would still work out cheaper than a cmyk print. however if you used a spot colour as well as cmyk it would be more expensive as there would be a 5 plated print.

It may also refer to sepia displaying tones from light tan to dark brown or cyanotype (“blueprint”) images, and early photographic methods such as Ambrotype, Tintype and Daguerreotype, each of which may be used to produce a monochromatic image.
In computing, monochrome has two meanings:
it may mean having only one color which is either on or off,
allowing shades of that color, although the latter is more correctly known as grayscale.

In most contexts other than digital imaging, however, the term "black and white" is used in place of "grayscale"; for example, photography in shades of gray is typically called "black-and-white photography". The term monochromatic in some digital imaging contexts is synonymous with grayscale (as it denotes absence of any concrete hue), and in some contexts synonymous with black-and-white.
Grayscale images are often the result of measuring the intensity of light at each pixel in a single band of the electromagnetic spectrum (e.g. infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, etc.), and in such cases they are monochromatic proper when only a given frequency is captured. from my summer brief i decided to select the character designs which i produced. they were based around a tennis ball, i developed this idea of a tennis ball being a good starting point for a shape of a face. this was developed by categorising it to be linked with the WIMBLEDON tennis tournament with the tag line of my work being GAME SET MATCH. this is the CMYK colour variation of my work.

this is a page from my character design sketchbook, it was inspired by the work of Jamie Hewlett. not in the sense of subject, but the way he pays attention to detail for all the parts of a face on his characters. i have explored this by using the same character, however changing his expressions or styles, this looks easy however it has to be considered as it is very easy to make the same character look completely different by just making one mistake, or an uncharacteristic expression. this is a very basic study of a characters face. there are many other things which need to be considered, i will look more into this at a later date.

I am very influenced by this illustrators work, as she uses a very unique style of realistic line drawing and combines it with hand drawn typography and than adds the finishing touches with computer software. however the digital part of the work is at a minimum or not obvious. this makes the work look original and very different to that of others. this illustrators work has been used by the likes of ELLE magazine. her work is a very feminine, fashion based. however the style is very original and would be interesting to use in other areas.

i have based my ongoing character design study, in the style of Jamie Hewlett's work. especially the style used for the gorillaz. however rather than stylizing my character study. i have concentrated on how i can create realistic movements and expressions etc in an animated style. this is shown perfectly by Hewlett, especially how he can express the body language of his characters so well. i will carry on this investigation, so that eventually i will be able to express my character designs in this fluent manor.
