i have decided to use summer as a time to develop my software and printing skills and to start on the big D.
i need to develop my skills on photoshop, so i have decided to create some designs which will hopefully make me more confident with it.

PPD/ portfolio evaluation
Reflect on your relationship between your portfolio of work and your creative ambitions as a designer.
my portfolio is mainly image based. its shows that my work has gone down the root of character design, however it also shows my developing skills in illustration and craft. i have developed a strong interest for screen-printing and the strengths within my portfolio are from print making. Even though my work is predominantly image based i also have began to involve type within my work. this I would like to develop as i progress into the third year.
Relate your own work to specific areas of contemporary design.
i would say that my work is heading towards a more illustration side of design, i look up to illustrators such as steven Harrington and Sanna Annukka. i would like to think my work shares some similarities to both of these designers, and i like working in the same area (screen printing). i also have produced work which is of a limited edition value as i like producing work which has an authentic, collectors feel to it. this is similar to Kid Robot- Dunny Vinyl toys and Johnny cupcakes- limited editon t shirt designer.
Evaluate your strengths and weaknesses against identified intentions and areas of contemporary practice.
My strengths at present would be my screen-print work and character/ illustration. therefore i have got a placement at a character designing company in newcastle called Paul Windels, this will give me a broader understanding of the type of briefs and style of work which is produced in this area of design. i will also be contacting screen printers and illustrators, so i can gain a broader understanding of how they receive work and seek more advice on my professional practice. My weakness in design is type and layout, i will need to gain a more in-depth understanding of this area in design to make my work stronger as i progress into the third year.
Clarify areas of design, skills development and professional concerns you aim to investigate further from this point forward.
i will be developing my screen printing skills, by trying and testing different styles of printing within this process which will allow me to have a more informed understanding as i begin my third year. i will Also be developing a broader understanding of type and layout and the rules which are related to this area of design, this will help me to combine my image style with typography in a more informed manor. i would also like to develop my skills on photoshop more as it work give me a chance to produces more work using software, this will develop my work from just looking hand crafted.
Briefly clarify the relationship between your creative practice and your proposed dissertation.
A study into the influences of subcultures on Graphic Design throughout the Post Modern period and how this is having an effect on design in contemporary culture.
i have chosen this as my dissertation as i believe subcultures have had a major influence on graphic design, and it will be interesting to see how this has developed and how styles have been adopted and created.

IMAGE- evaluation
BA (Hons.) GRAPHIC DESIGN – END OF MODULE SELF-EVALUATION

Level 02 Semester 0
1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
I have learnt how to work to fast deadlines for example in the first lesson when we were given a bit of text which we had to make an image for and an image which we had to extend. i thought this was a good way of working as it gets you thinking quicker and helps you to work under pressure. this is a realistic way of getting prepared for industry. the work i produced for this was at a very basic level, as i found it very had to work at this pace, however i will be practicing this style of working in my own time, this will help me find a more personal style of illustration. and give me a chance to explore ore mediums.
2. What approaches to generating work and solutions to problems have you developed and how have they helped?
i have developed the way i use inks when producing illustrations. this was mainly used in the eye charts, i enjoyed working with inks as it gave me a chance to be more expressive and it was good to produce interesting compositions and tone when layering different thickness of ink.
3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?
i found that the strengths in my work were the 3d object and the box which i created for the the day in the life project. i Will be including 3d craft more in my work in future projects, however it is time consuming, but i have found that if you spend more time by putting alot of craft into mock ups it looks a lot better when it comes to photographing your work, which over all saves time because you don't have to spend much time tweaking the content of images in photo shop.
4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how could you exploit these more fully?
i found that the weakness in my work were the quick briefs which we were given at the start of the project, i will be doing more of these in my own time, however i will be setting limitations such as colour, mediums i can use and scale for example, i will be collecting quotes, lyrics and story's which i will be able to create interesting images for. this will also give me a chance to research into editorial illustration and book illustration so that i am informing my design decisions.
5. Identify five things that you will do different next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?
i will spend more time on my blog, rather than posting randomely and in bulk i will even out my posting by posting twice a week. this will help me to see my progression in a more organised and structured way. this will also help me inform my design in a better way.
i will practice photographing my work better, for example different ways i can photograph such as useing a tripod, this will help my images to be more focused. this will help the presentation of my work to look better.
i will do more primarry research in my topic areas and do more research into target audiences, this will help my work to be more informed therfore will make designing a lot easier.
i will work on my presentation skills when it comes to crits etc. this is one of my major weaknesses which i have to spent alot of time perfecting. i need to work on being more formal and speaking of my ideas to other in a way so that they see what iam trying to get across.
